My memoir has a name — Mem — because she feels like a partner rather than a project. I’m learning how to be in a committed relationship with her: to stay when it’s uncomfortable, to listen when she’s quiet, and to keep showing up even when I’d rather run.
Some days Mem and I argue. Some days we avoid each other. And some days we sit quietly and find a way forward. Staying with Mem has taught me as much about trust and vulnerability in a long term relationship as it has about writing a book — and about rewriting the stories that shaped me.
